Summer is here and that means spending more time outdoors with family and friends. Isn’t it great to get together in the backyard, have a nice meal and just enjoy the lovely summer weather? Or perhaps after the kids have gone to bed you and your spouse like to sit on the back deck and relax with a cool summer beverage. Either way, it’s great to savour summer while we can!

Whether you’re like my family and enjoy having as many BBQ dinners on the patio as possible this time of year, or you’re always the host of the backyard party, you will want to be equipped with everything you need to have a fun outdoor dining experience.

Setting the Table

If you’re having a backyard party, wow your guests with a nicely set table. Start off with some simple, easy-to-clean placemats, then add a pop of colour with this green dinnerware set. Finish it off with this eco-friendly wooden cutlery and some plastic, reusable drinking glasses.

Serving in Style

Whether you mix up the perfect sangria or a refreshing iced tea, keep the drinks flowing with this 5L mason jar dispenser. If you have drinks in bottles and cans (or juice boxes for the kids) keep them nice and cold in this inflatable serving bar. Just fill it with ice and keep it at the side of your deck or just inside your door for easy access. You can even use it to keep fruits and veggies fresh and cool.

When it comes time to eat, serve that delicious food on some colourful platters! I love the patterns you can find on this collection — from this 3-section tray to this oval platter, or this bowl that is perfect for a garden salad or pasta salad to this veggies or chips and dip tray.

Add Some Ambience

While I love sitting outside during the summer, I like to have a little shade so I’m not sitting directly in the sun the entire time, and I know my guest do too. Set up a nice big patio umbrella or if you have space, a gazebo to sit under and possibly keep the bugs out. Another way to repel those pesky mosquitos is with some citronella candles. Place these tea lights in some pretty holders, like these vintage glass ones or this vintage lantern. If you’re staying out into the evening and need some extra light after the sun has gone down, why not try these solar-powered lantern-style lights or these solar mason jar lights. [Note: if you don’t already have mason jars you can get this box of 12 for 55% off!] Some nice lighting can definitely set the tone for outdoor summertime fun with family and friends.

By creating an inviting setting in your backyard you’ll be more than happy to spend a lot of time there throughout the summer. And of course, make fun memories with loved ones.

Now let’s get grilling!

I know, right?! As soon as the nice weather hits my kids are asking to eat outside regularly. And there have been a couple of times when impromptu BBQ dinners with friends, family and neighbours have happened 🙂

I wish we had a backyard of our own. This is one of the downsides to apartment living. We share a backyard with 11 other families!

I know what that’s like. My husband and I lived in an apartment for 3 years before buying our home. Maybe all the tenants can have a fun summer party? A nice way to get to know your neighbours 😉

Some awesome ideas here! I love the idea of the eco friendly wooden cutlery 🙂

I like trying to reduce waste as much as possible, so I tend to look for items that are reusable, eco-friendly or compostable. I thought that cutlery set was pretty cool 🙂

I’d say a nice Bluetooth speaker or similar is a good idea too. Music makes everything better. 🙂

I need a backyard, that is my only problem… sucks living in a townhouse. I dream of hosting things like this.

Is there a common area for residents to use? When I was a kid we lived in a townhouse and I remember a common space behind the houses where I’d play with neighbour kids and sometimes have picnics. Just an idea 😉
